Why aren't more cars like this?

Every time I open the hatch on the CRX my jaw drops as much as it opens. It’s downright cavernous. Why don’t more cars have liftgates?!

I’d seriously consider buying an up to date CRX. Reasonably practical, light, revvy engine, good chassis. They need to give the CRZ a proper engine and some weight reduction at least.

The only reason I can think of is definitely cost. Other than that, no reasons why cars shouldn’t have them.

Well....most cars have back seats so that would eat into the rear space.

I couldn’t agree more. liftbacks, hatchbacks, and wagons are awesome.

barn doors are pretty cool tool

This had a back seat in some markets. Just make them fold down. Most do anyways

cost and chassis rigidity/weight. And some myth that people don’t like hatchbacks lol

CRX > BRZ when it comes to cargo space and the ease of using it. Different story if the BRZ was a hatchback, but it isn’t.

Aaaaaand they are. They’re giving it a turbo-4 and losing the hybrid tech.

As I understand it, it mostly comes down to chassis rigidity; having a trunk allows there to be a structural member at the base of the rear window, which greatly increases the torsional rigidity of the car. This is why cars like the 350Z and 370Z have large strut braces (350) and cross-beams (370). Similarly, the Vantage has large cross/roof braces behind the rear seats, though they encroach on the hatch space less than the Nissans.

Along similar lines, this is why cars like the RX-8 and Skyline do not have fold-down rear seats. There are metal chassis panels separating the trunk and cabin, greatly increasing the rigidity of the chassis in this area. This allows there to be less material in the structure elsewhere, reducing the overall weight of the chassis. It would not be a stretch to assume that the FR-S/BRZ would be heavier than it is if it were a liftback.

2001-2006 Hyundai Elantra GT 5-door hatch (“fastback” roof line) with the seats still set for 5 occupants:

Fold the seats down (they go flat by first pulling the seat pans forward) and you can just about put a double mattress in it.

I think Ford missed an opportunity to do a hatchback on the new Mustang. The roofline is so steeply raked as it is, it would have lent itself very well to a 3-door.

Any coupe could easily be a liftgate, as they damn well should be.

350z is a great example of why not. If you want shock tower bracing a hatch isn’t the way to go.

My Hoondai’s is ridiculous, I seriously can fit 4 Miata wheel&tires back there without folding the seats down. If you put the seats down you can fit a recliner chair.

My 106’s boot is pretty capacious, ‘specially with the seats down. I managed to move close-to-all my worldly possessions to, and later from, uni with it. And, as I discovered a little while ago, it can actually hold its own boot.

Not bad for a car that’s a decent bit smaller than the first Bimmer MINI.
